Wylinka: Bridging Brazil’s scientific lab-to-market gap for the social good

Brazil ranks among the world’s largest producers of scientific research, yet by Wylinka’s own count only about 1.6% of that output ever reaches the market as innovation. Founded in Belo Horizonte in 2013 by Ana Carolina Calçado, who still leads it, the organization has made that gap its entire field of work: it sits between the laboratory and the market, helping researchers, universities and public bodies turn discoveries into deep-tech ventures, and strengthening the innovation ecosystems around them.

Its model is unusual for a Social Good Organization. It earns roughly half its income from services — strategic diagnostics, researcher-entrepreneur training, validation and acceleration programs — and draws the rest from public research-funding partnerships, notably with FAPESP, CIETEC and FAPDF. Grant-funded projects have driven its recent growth.

Two points deserve credit. First, transparency: it publishes its bylaws and independently audited accounts, both with clean opinions, which remains rarer than it should be among Brazilian organizations of its size. Second, focus: a compact team working a precise, measurable problem rather than a broad cause too large to embrace efficiently.
