Fundação Maria Emília was founded in 1998 in Salvador as a private social investor in public health and education, with a special focus on the state of Bahia. It is led by its president, Thereza Tourinho, and its executive director, Thamile Accioly.
Its model is unusual in Brazil: it raises no funds from the public. Its income comes from its own investment portfolio and from dividends on a shareholding in the Aliança da Bahia group. It runs no programs of its own. Instead it backs research, public-health scholarships at Johns Hopkins and Harvard, and health and education projects run by partners such as Obras Sociais Irmã Dulce.
