Rosa Celia Pimentel Barbosa
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Pediatric Cardiologist Dr. Rosa Celia Barbosa Fights for Children. The work of nationally respected cardiologist and pediatrician, Dr. Rosa Celia is an ideal example for the entire world. The motivation behind her commitment to needy children stems from her personal and professional background. Dr. Barbosa was born into a poverty-stricken family and placed in an orphanage at the age of seven. Two of her brothers died from lack of proper medical care. At a very early age, she learned how to recover from setbacks and misfortune. She decided to study medicine and she graduated from medical school in 1969 from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She was awarded a grant and spent three years in London at the National Heart Hospital specializing in pediatric cardiology. A Fellowship Award enabled her to complete her training at Children’s Hospital in Houston, TX. Her desire to master the latest technologies led to six months of free study at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston, Mass, with whom she continues a relationship. From humble beginnings, Rosa Celia was already a success story just by the fact that she was entering The State University of Rio de Janeiro, not to mention a woman entering university. While studying medicine at the university she apprenticed in the Hospital Miguel Couto, Casa de Saúde São Miguel and Hospital Aloísio de Castro. Upon graduation, and despite not speaking English, she earned a scholarship from the British Council to study under the tutelage of world renowned pediatric cardiologist Dr. Jane Somerville. Rosa Celia would quickly master the English language and go on to complete 3 years at the National Heart Hospital of England. After leaving England, she completed her formation at the Texas Children’s Hospital of Houston; again a world recognized institution for cardiology. Dr. Rosa Celia then returned to Brazil and changed the scope of pediatric cardiology in the country, utilizing the unique knowledge and experience gained from her studies abroad. She founded the Children’s Cardiology Clinic, created the Pediatric Cardiology Unit of Hospital Pro Cardiaco and in 1996 founded the Pró Criança Cardiaca, a non-profit organization whose mission was to focus on providing medical attention and cardiac surgery to underprivileged children. In 2001, the institutional’s headquarters was established on Rua Dona Mariana, 40, in the Botafogo neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. As of April, 2006, the institution has provided more than 8,525 consultations for children, performed over 800 surgeries and more than 250 cardiac catheterizations. On average the institution attends to 40 children each week and performs 4-6 surgeries each month. The institution also offers preventive dental care to children and works in partnership with the Committee for Democratization of Information (CDI) in creating a digital patient database. In addition, Pro Criança Cardíaca supplies medicines and food staples to patient families. Stemming from her own volition, Dr. Rosa Celia has created a place for all children suffering from heart disease to have the best possible treatment available. The funding of this work would also not be possible without the perseverance of this diminutive dynamo that is in the person of Dr. Rosa Celia, and continues through the kindnesses of friends, associates and private businesses. This type of philanthropy in Brazil is also a rare occurrence and is just another aspect of the miracle of Dr. Rosa Celia and her importance to the community that she serves. In 2014, the Hospital Pediátrico Pro Criança Jutta Batista was inaugurated to ensure continuity and sustainability of the work being done by Pro Criança Cardíaca since 1996 and as a new option among pediatric hospitals in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, with the best infrastructure and technology for pediatric diagnosis and treatment. The mission is to gather several health solutions to assist all patients’ needs and to offer the best in medicine for the unprivileged cardiac children through the Pro Criança Cardíaca. The Hospital is established on Rua Dona Mariana, 220, in the Botafogo neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. Dr. Rosa Celia’s efforts rely solely on the charity of donors and volunteers to continue her lifesaving work.

History

Pro Criança Cardíaca was founded in 1996 with the purpose of offering support to low-income children with heart disease. The decision to care for these children arose from a growing need: each year, more and more families sought help at Dr. Rosa's private clinic, CCI (Clínica Cardiológica Infantil). Ignoring this demand was not an option, since these children were there, needing help. The right time to act had arrived.

We already had an organized outpatient care structure and the ability to diagnose these children when necessary. The Pediatric Unit at Hospital Pró-Cardíaco was already established, with all the essential resources to provide specialized medical care. But there was still an important "C" missing from our mission: the "C" for children in need. The Brazilian public health system did not have enough beds to care for all the children who needed...

The Brazilian public health system did not have enough beds to care for all the children who needed it, and every day more patients sought our services. It was then that we felt the need to grow in order to meet this demand.

In 2001, with the support of BNDES, Amil Seguro Saúde and our benefactor, we were able to open the Pro Criança Cardíaca headquarters in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. The institution, a non-profit medical organization founded by cardiologist Dr. Rosa Célia, who still heads the work, was created for a simple reason: for Dr. Rosa, it was impossible to deny help to low-income families who came to her private practice.

Over its 29 years of existence, Pro Criança Cardíaca has treated more than 16,000 outpatients and performed almost 1,800 invasive procedures, such as heart surgeries and catheterizations. And, with this growing structure, we have also been able to offer additional support to these families, such as donating medicines and food. In 2003, under the management of Dr. Pierre Neto Gentil and in partnership with Amil, we opened our dental unit, marking a major advance in the care of children with heart disease. In 2014, we founded the Jutta Batista Pro Criança Pediatric Hospital to continue and expand the care we offer.

Currently, the institution serves approximately 240 low-income children per month, with a team of highly qualified cardiologists. When the children arrive, they are clinically evaluated and undergo tests such as electrocardiograms and echocardiograms. More specialized tests, such as hematological tests and Holter monitoring, are performed at the Jutta Batista Pediatric Hospital and the CCI. If any invasive procedure is necessary, it is performed at the hospital, and, after discharge, monitoring continues with the same team that started the treatment, providing safety and comfort for the families.

Our commitment goes beyond medical procedures. Dr. Rosa always had in mind that the health unit should be a complete space, which met not only the clinical needs of the children, but also the well-being of the families. For this reason, we offer multidisciplinary care, with dentistry, dermatology, nutrition, psychology and ophthalmology services. We also provide assistance with food, medicine, diapers, books and toys. Donations are essential to keep the institution running, which depends on this philanthropic support to continue offering all of these services.

In addition, Pro Criança Cardíaca is proud to adopt ethical and humane management, with a commitment to governance and employees. For this exemplary work, we have been recognized for four consecutive years as one of the 100 best NGOs in Brazil and one of the 15 best in the health sector.

For many of these families, we are the only alternative, the only chance for treatment. And it is with this purpose that we continue, each day more committed to transforming lives and offering hope.
