Helping children in vulnerable situations has always been at our heart, although the way we do it has changed over time. What has been consistent is our desire to always improve the way we make an impact – and promote a spirit of learning and growth from the beginning.
In 1938, the American couple Calvitt and Helen Clarkee lived in China on a Presbyterian mission to support orphaned children, victims of the country's war with Japan. Thus, we were first born as the China Children's Fund, then as the Christian Children's Fund, and now as ChildFund. The initiative was so successful that they decided to expand the organization to several other countries.
In 1966, South America got its first office to serve the region. A few years later, Brazil received its own structure, and since then, our headquarters have been located in Belo Horizonte. Currently, the NGO is present in seven states (Bahia, Ceará, Goiás, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Paraíba and Piauí). To carry out this work that has a positive impact on the lives of more than 189 thousand people, including around 83 thousand children and adolescents, the organization relies on donations from individuals, through the child sponsorship program and also from donations from companies, institutes and foundations that support the projects developed.
The organization was internationally awarded in 2024 and is among the top 25 in the Brazilian ranking issued by The Dot Good, a social project certifier based in Switzerland that evaluates the local and global impacts of NGOs worldwide. ChildFund Brazil was also elected the best social assistance NGO in the country in 2022 and the best NGO for children and adolescents in Brazil for three years (2018, 2019, and 2021) by the Best NGOs Award, which also ranked it among the 100 best NGOs in the country for seven years.
ChildFund currently aims to become a global leader in combating violence against children on the Internet. To achieve this goal, we run campaigns to raise awareness about the issue and conduct research to support political advocacy with authorities to improve legislation on the issue.
The NGO has positioned itself as an international organization that operates in more than 70 countries and is dedicated to child protection, social development, and advocacy for children, adolescents, youth, and their families.
