In 1964, Dr. Márcio de Lima Castro, a physician and rehabilitation specialist, after returning from specialized courses abroad, brought a new vision of the neuromotor rehabilitation process of childhood and adolescence. From this experience, he designed a center for treatment of physical and neurological rehabilitation in children, due to the large number of children with sequelae of Polio (Infantile Paralysis), many with restricted financial conditions and without access to adequate treatment. In this context, Dr. Márcio idealized the AMR, with the support of a team of physical medicine, rehabilitation doctors and other partners. The AMR's constitution meeting took place on July 27, 1964, with the approval of the entity's statute, election of members of the Superior Council and Director, and registration in the Registry Office of Legal Entities. Since the conception of AMR, all rehabilitation treatment has been offered free of charge to children and adolescents (0 to 18 years old) from families living in situations of social vulnerability. In Minas Gerais, we are a reference in interdisciplinary care, with specialized professionals in areas such as Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Sports Therapy, Music Therapy, Nutrition, Dentistry, Pediatrics, Neurology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Gastroenterology, and Otorhinolaryngology. In addition to health services, which include surgeries funded by AMR, families receive support from Social Services, school monitoring, therapeutic equipment (e.g. lower and upper limb orthoses, wheelchairs, etc.), as well as the monthly delivery of diapers and food baskets. Currently, approximately 500 families from Belo Horizonte (residents in all 9 regions) and the Metropolitan Region are served at the institution.
